My first official catering gig (!!!!), even though I was hired by my sister…but I was ecstatic to have this opportunity to plan and cook for a book-themed and co-ed baby shower. I decided to prepare dishes that were inspired by popular children’s books. The other challenge was that the party was taking place during dinner time, so while keeping everything bite-sized (so it would feel more like a baby shower versus a family style potluck), I wanted to make sure that the menu would consist of a few heartier dishes so that nobody would leave hungry.
After spending some time on Pinterest, I gotta say that people constantly surprise me with their creativity! I pinned so many ideas onto my baby shower board and had to narrow down to a smaller list of selections.
Here is the menu:
The Stinky Cheese Man’s Cheese Platter
(If you haven’t read this awesome parody on popular fairy tales, what are you waiting for?)
Peter Rabbit’s Crudité Platter with Hummus Dip
Green Deviled Eggs with Prosciutto Ham Crisps
Dragon Loves Mini Tacos
One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Pink Fish Cakes
Goodnight Moon(shaped) Cheddar Crackers
Cloudy with a Chance of Spaghetti and Meatball Cups
Strega Nona’s Famous Penne with Roasted Vegetables
Lorax’s Truffula Juice
The Hungry Caterpillar’s Favorite Fruits
The Hungry Caterpillar Cupcake Display
Enjoy the pictures and I will post some of the recipes next.
Use the Scoops tortilla chips, lay a small piece of lettuce on the bottom to catch any moisture from the other condiments, so that the chips will stay nice and crisp. On top of the lettuce, there were corn, mashed black bean, tomato, cheddar cheese, guacamole, and taco sauce.
Remember to soak the apple slices in lemon water to prevent them from turning brown.
Can you guess how many diapers are in this cake? The mom-to-be guessed the exact number!
The very hungry caterpillar cupcake display was a BIG hit at the party and isn’t difficult to put together.
I used store-bought hummus dip, put the container on a bed of purple cabbage.
These cheddar crackers are very addictive and healthy (made with whole wheat flour). Much better for you than store-bought crackers.
Look for some type of orange colored beverage that will be perfect to make up Lorax’s face. Sunny-D will be great, as well as orange juice. I mixed equal parts of V8 Fusion and sparkling water.
I’ll post some of these recipes soon 🙂
